Another Nuggets player could leave, but it’s not a done deal yet

The Denver Nuggets might have lost another player this offseason.

And this time it’s to a rival trying to pry him away.

According to multiple reports on Saturday morning, Spencer Jones has agreed to an offer sheet with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s a two-year, $12 million deal and the Nuggets have 48 hours to decide if they want to match.

Jones was a pleasant surprise for the Nuggets last year, earning a spot in David Adelman’s rotation after a plethora of injuries. But Jones stuck around even when most guys were healthy, known for his tenacious defense and sneaky good shot.

He played in 64 regular season games, averaging 5.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and .8 assists per contest. In six playoff games against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jones averaged 24.2 minutes per game. As Charania notes in the tweet above, he was deadly from three-point range, making nine of the 13 he took in the six-game series.

The Nuggets have already lost Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Miami Heat this summer and cut Jonas Valanciunas. He’ll play overseas next season, as will David Roddy who departed on Friday.

Peyton Watson’s future also remains unclear, and like Jones, he’s a restricted free agent. Now the Nuggets front office must decide if they want to match this offer sheet from the Thunder or let Jones walk to another contender in the West.

Luxury tax penalties will likely play a role in the decision, but if Denver believes it’s still in a championship window with Nikola Jokic, it might be tempted to pay up.

The next couple of days are about to get really interesting.
