Nuggets lose backup forward David Roddy as he heads overseas

Former Denver Nuggets forward David Roddy has chosen to leave the NBA and sign with Hapoel Jerusalem Basketball Club of Israel’s Winner League. The former Colorado State star and Mountain West Player of the Year is departing Denver after just one season on a two-way contract, which he signed on March 4.

In his five games with the Nuggets, Roddy averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game, shooting 50.0 percent from the field. Roddy gave Denver fans a glimpse of what he could do. He poured in 36 points over the final two regular-season games, including a season-high 21 points in a victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was a major reason the Nuggets defeated the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs in Game 82.

The 25-year-old Roddy carved out a college legacy at Colorado State, where he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game during his junior season, earning Mountain West Player of the Year honors and USBWA All-America Honorable Mention in 2022. He was originally drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2022, and his NBA journey took him through stops with Memphis, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston and Philadelphia before landing in Denver.

Now, Roddy heads overseas to Hapoel Jerusalem on a 1+1 contract, joining a club that competes in both the Winner League and EuroCup. The move is another blow to a Nuggets offseason that continues to trend in the wrong direction. Denver is coming off a disappointing first-round playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves and has been losing depth pieces rather than adding new talent. With several unrestricted free agents from last season’s roster still unsigned, the Nuggets are facing a critical stretch as they try to retool around Nikola Jokic and contend for a championship.

For Roddy, the decision represents a fresh start and a chance at consistent playing time that the NBA never quite provided. For Denver, it’s one more piece walking out the door in what’s shaping up to be a challenging summer.
