Ex-Rockies manager, GM find work with other teams

The Rockies mashed the reset button on their baseball operations over the course of the last several months, but the two men at the helm for the club’s descent into Major League Baseball’s abyss managed to find landing spots elsewhere in the sport — although not at their previous positions.

Ex-general manager Bill Schmidt and former manager Bud Black recently took positions with the Athletics and the San Diego Padres, respectively. For Black, it represents a return to the club he managed for nine seasons (2007-15) prior to assuming the Rockies’ reins in 2017.

Black rejoins the Padres as senior advisor of baseball operations. He’s indicated that he would be interested in potentially returning to the dugout as a manager at some point, but no opening materialized in the wake of his May dismissal after a 7-33 start.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported of Schmidt’s move to the Athletics, where he will assume a scouting role, returning to the job he held earlier in his career before rising up the Rockies’ hierarchy over the last quarter-century before assuming the general manager position in 2021 — first on an interim basis after the departure of Jeff Bridich, then later with the “interim” tag removed.

The Rockies dismissed Schmidt just after finishing their 43-119 season.
