The Colorado Rockies have called up a third baseman to AAA Albuquerque in a move that shows how well he's been playing and that a bigger move could potentially be brewing

The Colorado Rockies don’t have a whole lot of avenues in the near future to get back into the playoff picture in the major leagues. The train has completely come off the tracks the last few seasons, and the club’s efforts to keep brining in aging middle infielders hasn’t exactly been working.

However, there is a fair amount of young talent on the roster in the big leagues and all throughout the lower levels of the organization. Guys like Ezequiel Tovar, Charlie Condon and Chase Dollander all have the potential to be solid major league players, but they still need plenty of time and reps to develop. They tend to get all of the attention within the organization, while a guy by the name of Kyle Karros has been raking for the Hartford Yard Goats in AA.

On Friday, the club announced that the 22-year-old was being promoted to the Albuquerque Isotopes, the AAA affiliate of the Rockies.

He is ranked as the No. 18 overall prospect within the Rockies organization, and the No. 11 hitting prospect.

In 55 games for the Yard Goats this season, Karros is slashing .294/.399/.462 with 21 RBIs and 23 extra-base hits. His strikeout rate is also only 19%, a good sign for people who are tired of watching Michael Toglia waltz up to the plate and swing-and-miss for the Rockies.

He’s still got to get through AAA before he’s taking the field at the best bar in Denver. However, this is a good sign that the young guns lower in the organization are making an impact to move up in the ranks.

Karros is also a third baseman, which could be a sign that the Rockies are preparing to find someone to fill the void left behind by Ryan McMahon in a potential trade with the deadline coming up in under two weeks. The longtime Rockie has been linked to the New York Yankees recently, as they are a contender in search of a solid third baseman to round out their infield.

Karros’ move doesn’t guarantee a trade at all, but it could mean something a little more than just a traditional promotion based on performance. Nonetheless, he’s been playing well for Hartford, and has rightfully earned the promotion to the Isotopes.
