Warren Schaeffer wasn’t overly concerned about Ezequiel Tovar’s injury in Monday’s win

The Colorado Rockies finally won their 10th game of the season against the Miami Marlins on Monday, but they had to finish the job without their Gold Glove shortstop, Ezequiel Tovar. The 23-year-old made it to the bottom of the eighth inning before exiting after feeling discomfort in his midsection.

Tovar had four at-bats in Monday’s contest before exiting the game, tallying a hit, a run and two strikeouts. His single in the fifth inning put him on base as the tying run before Hunter Goodman belted a two-run home run over the center field wall to put Colorado on top for the rest of the game. On the defensive side of the diamond, he had two putouts and two assists.

After the win, Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer didn’t express much concern regarding the injury to one of the best fielders on the team, and it seems that it was more of a precautionary move and that he should be back in action for Game 2 of the three-game stint against Miami.

“He felt a slight something in his body, so I just wanted to take care of him and get him out,” Schaeffer said postgame.

After a phenomenal 2024 campaign for the purple and black, Tovar’s numbers have slightly dipped in 2025, part of which can be attributed to the left hip contusion he suffered in the middle of April that knocked him out of the lineup for about a month. His batting average (.258) and slugging percentage (.406) are both down from a season ago, his WAR is down by 3.2 from a season ago, and his fielding percentage is also way down, sitting at just .968 after he finished 2024 at .988.

First pitch for Tuesday’s game is slated for 4:40 p.m. MDT from Miami. The Rockies hope to have their shortstop back in the lineup as they aim to win their first series of the season.
