Karros’ homer pushes Rockies to series win over Giants

Rockies Report, Game 91:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Kyle Karros’ three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday turned a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 win that sealed a series win and gave the Rox their fourth triumph in their last five games after opening the seven-game homestand with a pair of defeats last Monday and Tuesday to Miami.

Karros crushed a Dylan Smith fastball 471 feet to the back of the left-field seats and toward the concourse, bringing home TJ Rumfield and Troy Johnston, who had both reached base after Hunter Goodman struck out to open the inning. Karros’ homer was Colorado’s only hit with runners in scoring position; otherwise, they went 0-for-7 with RISP. But he made the one success count.

Reliever Jordan Romano completed the rally with his first save in a Rockies uniform after notching four for the Angels in March and April before being designated for assignment. Romano’s work capped four scoreless innings for the bullpen.

The Rockies improved to 37-54.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tanner Gordon overcame a two-out walk in the first inning, but had no such look getting out of a one-out single in the second inning, as Drew Gilbert’s homer started the Giants’ scoring, as they eventually tagged Gordon for four runs on six hits and a pair of walks over five innings.

All of the runs Gordon allowed came on homers, and he now has a HR/9 average of 2.18 for the season. The dingers were the ninth, 10th and 11th that he’s given up so far this year at the major-league level.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Romano got Willy Adames to swing and miss for the 27th out with Jonah Cox on second base.
