Rockies pounded by Marlins’ 21-hit, 14-run night

Rockies Report, Game 86:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Miami continued its mastery of the Rockies on Tuesday night, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never relinquishing it en route to a 14-3 flogging of the Rockies in front of 20,526 at Coors Field on Tuesday night.

Miami mashed 21 hits — including eight of the extra-base ilk — to gradually knock the Rox down for the count. Mickey Moniak’s solo homer in the first represented the extent of the Rockies’ scoring until the seventh inning, by which point they trailed 10-1. It was Moniak’s first homer since returning from the injured list; the last previous time he went yard was May 13 at Pittsburgh. His OPS since returning remains at just .428.

Marlins third baseman Javier Sanoja continued riddling the Rockies. One night after breaking Monday’s 10-7 game wide open with a bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning, he went 3-for-5, highlighting his night with a three-run homer off Tanner Gordon to expand Miami’s lead to 5-1 in the third.

The rest of the damage came at the expense of Colorado’s bullpen, which was rocked for a second-consecutive night. Seth Halvorsen and John Brebbia allowed eight earned runs over 2 1/3 innings, with Brebbia allowing a pair of home runs — one each in the seventh and eighth innings.

It got so out of hand that catcher Brett Sullivan made his fifth mop-up pitching appearance of the season — and his first in the entire month of June. Sullivan threw the final 1 2/3 innings, surrendering an earned run on three hits and a walk.

Colorado fell to 33-53 and finished the month with an 11-15 mark. The Rockies remain in search of their first .500 or better month since going 14-13 in May 2024.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Two consecutive extra-base hits in the top of the first by Kyle Stowers and Griffin Conine started Gordon’s return from the 15-day injured list on the wrong foot, and he never quite found his ground before being relieved after five innings and 74 pitches. When he left, the deficit was a modest four runs at 5-1; the floodgates opened at the expense of reliever Seth Halvorsen in the sixth.

Gordon hasn’t made it to the 90-pitch mark in his three major-league starts so far this season, with the Rockies losing all three games. He dropped to 0-2.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Miami strung together three-consecutive two-out RBI singles in the sixth inning, pushing its lead to 8-1.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 10.13 — Colorado’s bullpen ERA — not including Sullivan’s work late Tuesday night — since the start of the Minnesota series last Friday.

WHAT’S NEXT: Game Three of the series against Miami, as the Rockies continue searching for their first win of the campaign against the Fish. Kyle Freeland and Max Meyer will get the nods. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
