Rockies win as Goodman blasts 27th homer of season

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman didn’t cool off with the flipping of the calendar from June to July, launching his 27th homer of the season to cap a four-run fifth inning that powered the Rockies to an 6-3 win over the Miami Marlins at Coors Field on Wednesday night.

Mickey Moniak also pitched in finishing a single shy of the cycle. His three hits Wednesday matched his tally in eight games since returning from the injured list on June 22.

Together, Moniak and Goodman drove in five of the Rockies’ six runs. Kyle Karros added a solo homer in the seventh inning, pushing the Colorado lead to what would be the final margin.

After some rough outings in the previous five games, the bullpen delivered, as Juan Mejia, Jimmy Herget and Brennan Bernardino combine four four innings of one-hit, one-run ball. Bernardino picked up the save, his first of the season.

Colorado is 34-53.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Kyle Freeland held the sizzling Marlins to just two baserunners in the first three innings, with one being wiped out when Goodman gunned down Javier Sanoja as he attempted to steal second base after a leadoff walk in the seventh innings. Thanks to Goodman’s throw, it didn’t come back to haunt the Rox.

All of the real trouble for Freeland came in the fourth, when he allowed three consecutive base hits — a single, a double and a triple from Sanoja, who continued his monster form in the series. But Freeland would escape his final inning — the fifth — with no damage after allowing a pair of one-out singles.

Freeland earned credit for the win, his first since April 7; he went 12 starts without a victory prior to Wednesday. He also allowed just one walk and now has just four walks in his last seven starts against 33 strikeouts, including seven at Miami’s expense.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Bernardino retired the Marlins 1-2-3 in the ninth inning.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .130 — Moniak’s batting average since returning from the injured list prior to Monday. His three-hit night raised his post injury batting average by 92 points.
