Rockies’ two solo homers aren’t enough in 5-2 defeat

Rockies Report, Game 80:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Rockies went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and could only pierce the scoreboard via solo home runs by Willi Castro and Ezequiel Tovar on Tuesday night, dooming them to a 5-2 defeat to the Boston Red Sox in front of 29,961 at Coors Field.

The afterglow of Monday night’s comeback faded quickly in the top of the first, when Wilyer Abreu’s one-out triple scored Nate Eaton and put Boston in front to stay. Nate Eaton’s RBI single in the second quickly extended the Red Sox edge to 2-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Willi Castro drove a Sonny Gray cutter 435 feet into the second level of the right-field stands, bringing the Rox back within 2-1.

But that was as close as they would draw, as an Abreu solo homer in the fifth and a pair of RBI hits from Eaton and Ceddane Rafeala at Zach Agnos’ expense expanded the lead.

Tovar’s ninth-inning solo shot narrowed the deficit to the final margin. Colorado fell to 31-49.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Rookie Sean Sullivan’s first Coors Field start was a mixed bag, all things considered. He was able to escape a pair of two-on jams in the third and fourth innings, but allowed multiple baserunners in four of his five innings, didn’t post a clean inning and walked five batters and balked once over the course of his five-inning, 94-pitch night.

Still, he kept the Rockies in it; when he departed, the Rox trailed only 3-1. But the walks are a concern, and he now has as many free passes as strikeouts through his three starts — two of which saw him absorb the loss.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Tyler Freeman hit into a 4-6-3 double play with TJ Rumfield on first in the eighth; Rumfield had led off the inning with a single.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.92 — Sullivan’s WHIP over three major-league starts.

WHAT’S NEXT: The series and homestand finale, as the Rockies look to win their second-consecutive series. Kyle Freeland will start for Colorado; Ranger Suarez goes for the Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MDT.
