Rockies open by striking out seven-straight times en route to 11-2 defeat

MILWAUKEE — Rockies Report, Game 107:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Swing and a miss, swing and a miss, swing and a miss …

That’s how it started for the Rockies against Brewers All-Star right-hander Jacob Misiorowski, and it just kept going, much like that — albeit with one strikeout looking — for the first seven Colorado batters Sunday, a franchise record for most strikeouts to open a game.

It took until the fifth inning for a Rockies batter to reach base, and by the time Cole Carrigg lined a Misiorowski offering over the left-field fence to break up the no-hitter after 4 1/3 innings, the Rox already trailed 3-1 en route to absorbing an 11-2, series-ending drubbing at American Family Field on Sunday.

“That’s a one-of-one fastball — 103 with all that extension. It’s hard to react to that. He just throws it all the time,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “It’s elite.”

Ultimately, 12 of the first 13 Rockies batters to reach the plate against Misiorowski struck out — the first time any pitcher has opened a game in that way since at least 1920.

Maatters didn’t truly get away from the Rox until the sixth inning. Kyle Freeland entered the frame having thrown four shutout innings following a rough first, but Andrew Vaughn changed that with a leadoff homer to increase Milwaukee’s lead to 4-1. A strikeout and a walk followed, and Freeland handed the ball to Jimmy Herget after an 86-pitch, 5 1/3-inning day.

But Herget’s recent struggles continued. With Jake Bauers on base via a Freeland walk, Herget walked Gary Sánchez on four pitches, then surrendered three-consecutive doubles before allowing an RBI groundout.

By the time the smoke cleared, Milwaukee had five runs — three credited to Herget — and firm control of the game after its five-run sixth inning. The Brewers added a pair of seventh-inning runs at the expense of Victor Vodnik and one off catcher Brett Sullivan, who was called upon to mop up the afternoon.

Willi Castro burnished his potential trade value with a solo homer in the seventh inning to cap Colorado’s scoring. Meanwhile, Milwaukee ultimately matched a club record with nine doubles at the Rockies’ expense.

Colorado fell to 42-65.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

With Freeland reportedly available via trade, it would have been a nice opportunity for a good start to potentially add to his potential value at the deadline. But the result Sunday was a mixed bag, as he found himself in a 1-0 hole within three pitches and a 3-0 deficit after the inning.

Jackson Chourio rifled Freeland’s first pitch of the day into left-center field for a leadoff double, and then Brice Turang moved him over with a successful bunt, which Freeland exacerbated by missing the throw down the first-base line, scoring Chourio from third base. Turang eventually scored on a wild pitch to Bauers, which moved William Contreras to third, allowing Bauers to bring him home with a one-out sacrifice fly.

After that, Freeland yielded just two baserunners over the following four innings — both on extra-base hits — keeping the Rockies within striking distance. But Vaughn led off the sixth inning with a homer — the fifth extra-base hit allowed by Freeland — and that launched the Brewers toward a sixth inning that put away the game.

Freeland’s record dropped to 2-10 .
