Rockies outhit Cardinals 10-4, but drop road-trip opener

Rockies Report, Game 116:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Colorado’s lengthy road trip got off to a frustrating start in St. Louis on Friday night, as Colorado out-hit the Cardinals by more than a 2-to-1 margin, but still fell, 3-2.

Troy Johnston’s RBI groundout in the top of the second inning scored TJ Rumfield to put the Rox up 1-0, but that didn’t last long. St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning after a pop-up single and a line-drive double put runners on second and third. Consecutive sacrifice flies brought home a pair of runs to put the Cardinals up 2-1.

One inning later, Iván Herrera launched his 13th homer of the season — a solo shot — to increase St. Louis’ lead. The Rox got runners on second and third with no out in the fourth, but could only plate one run on another Johnston RBI groundout.

Both teams combined to go 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position, but the Rockies were a ghastly 0-for-10, frittering away their chances as they fall to 45-71 and lost their fourth-consecutive game.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It was a frustrating night for Ryan Feltner, who walked three and committed a throwing error while allowing only four hits — although two were of the extra-base variety. He was relieved after his final walk of the night, having completed 5 1/3 innings.

Feltner kept the Rockies in it, dancing around the traffic and holding the Cardinals to three runs. But that was not enough to dodge his sixth loss of the season.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Kyle Karros hit into a double play after Ezequiel Tovar’s leadoff walk in the ninth inning.
