Rockies fall despite Goodman’s three home runs

Rockies Report, Game 101:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman had his second three-home-run game in just over three weeks, matching the tally he recorded June 27 at Minnesota, but an early Reds barrage at the expense of starter Ryan Feltner ensured that Colorado’s barrage of four homers overall wasn’t enough to prevent a 9-6 defeat in front of 20,158 at a scorching Coors Field on Sunday afternoon.

Goodman’s first homer of the day, a solo shot to straightaway center field in the bottom of the first inning, got the Rox on the scoreboard after the Reds piled up five runs in the top of the first. His second came in the sixth inning, bringing home Jake McCarthy to pull the Rockies back within 9-3.

Homer No. 3 brought home Mickey Moniak in the eighth inning, whittling the Reds’ deficit down to 9-5, giving the Rox a chance entering the ninth inning — an opportunity that seemed unlikely as Cincinnati besieged Colorado starter Ryan Feltner for three home runs en route to building an 8-1 lead by the middle of the second inning. A Tyler Stephenson homer off reliever Tanner Gordon — Stephenson’s second of the day — pushed Cincinnati’s advantage to 9-1 before the Goodman-spurred rally.

Willi Castro’s leadoff homer in the ninth inning brought the Rox back within 9-6, but after Kyle Karros singled, two strikeouts and a pop out followed, ending the Colorado comeback threat.

Gordon and Jordan Romano combined for 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits between them after relieving Feltner in the third inning.

Colorado fell to 40-61.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The ball was flying in the 90-plus heat Sunday, and that put Feltner into a pickle early as he allowed. pair of two-out homers to put the Reds in front early. Nathaniel Lowe and Stephenson each went yard to put the Reds up 5-0 before the Rockies came to bat, and then Sal Stewart launched a 3-run homer in the second inning, scoring Dane Myers and Elly De La Cruz to provide Cincinnati all the runs it would need.

Walks were a problem for Feltner in his brief appearances of 2 1/3 innings; he yielded four free passes, the final two of which came in succession and ended his day after 71 pitches.

Feltner has now issued eight walks in his last 6 2/3 innings after two walk-free starts covering 12 innings of work. He’s also given up seven home runs in his last four starts — including five in his last two. As a result, his ERA has gone up by a full run over his last two starts — from 4.27 to 5.48 — a frustrating trend after he notched three-consecutive quality starts.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Edouard Julien popped out with Karros on second base in the bottom of the ninth, ending the Rox’ attempted comeback.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 10 — Games Goodman had gone without a home run before his Sunday onslaught. It had been his longest skein without a homer this season.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland makes his first post-All-Star-Game start as the Rox begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. Andrew Alvarez will get the nod for the visitors, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
