Rockies see four-game winning streak end on Padres’ walk-off grand slam

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: After the Padres and Rockies exchanged single runs in the 10th and 11th innings, Colorado’s failure to score in the 12th proved fatal, as Xander Bogaerts delivered a walk-off grand slam to end the Rox’ four-game winning streak in heartbreaking fashion, by a 7-3 count in the series opener at Petco Park on Thursday night.

The first game in this MLB season to go past 11 innings saw the Rockies extend it thanks to a Tyler Freeman RBI single in the 10th and a Brett Sullivan run-scoring double in the 11th.

However, that 11th inning ultimately proved to be a lost opportunity, as the Rockies had a two-out, none-on situation following Sullivan’s hit and a Troy Johnston walk. But TJ Rumfield struck out, Ezequiel Tovar ground out and Willi Castro whiffed on a 3-2 David Morgan curveball that caught the inside corner of the plate.

Castro was thrown out at home plate in the top of the 12th inning when he darted for the plate on contact from a Brenton Doyle grounder to second; the Rox subsequently had a two-out, two-on opportunity, but Kyle Karros grounded out to short.

That set the stage for the 12th inning, when Valente Bellozo’s ERA bore the unfortunate weight of a pair of intentional walks that followed Fernando Tatis Jr’s. sacrifice bunt, called to set up force plays all around the infield. Bogaerts’ no-doubter shot into the left-field seats followed.

The Rockies saw a chance to go above .500 for the first time since play began on April 2, 2023 slip away. Colorado dropped to 6-7.

Also marring the night was an injury to catcher Hunter Goodman, who left after being hit in the finger by a Randy Vásquez pitch. Sullivan replaced him in the lineup. X-rays were negative, Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer told media after the game.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Jimmy Herget drew the assignment as Chase Dollander’s opener Thursday night, and he needed a mere 10 pitches to dispose of Jake Cronenworth, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill in the bottom of the first inning before handing the baton to the 2023 first-round choice. The inning continued Herget’s strong start to the campaign; in seven innings over six appearances, he has a 0.57 WHIP and six strikeouts with a 1.29 ERA. He has yet to issue a walk.

Dollander was effective for the second-straight time working behind an opener, just as he did last Saturday against Philadelphia. He’s allowed just one run in each of his last two appearances.

“It was good pitching up and down the game,” Schaeffer said.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Bogaerts walked off the Rox.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 2.08 — Dollander’s ERA in his last two appearances, which have seen him post identical lines: 4 1/3 innings, four hits, one walk and one run allowed.
