Rockies can’t get sweep, pounded 7-1 by Twins

Rockies Report, Game 99:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Mickey Moniak’s 448-foot blast off the facade of the third deck above right field represented the sum total of the Rockies’ offense Sunday as the Minnesota Twins squashed them 7-1, denying the Rox their first home sweep in nearly 14 months and ending a two-game winning streak.

Moniak punished an elevated sinker from Joe Ryan, but that proved to be the only big mistake the All-Star made, as he otherwise neutralized Colorado’s bats, holding them to five hits. His control was pinpoint, as he didn’t walk a single Rox batter while striking out 11.

Jordan Beck had three hits and Ryan McMahon had two, but the rest of the lineup went a combined 1-for-23.

Colorado is 24-75.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Germán Márquez didn’t have it right from the start, walking leadoff man Trevor Larnach to open the game. This started a pattern, as he walked the leadoff batter in each of the three innings he worked.

Each time he rallied to retire the subsequent batter. Each inning, the third man to the plate reached base. The pattern deviated a bit from there, but somehow he escaped damage in the first two innings via a force out at home plate in the first inning and a 4-6-3 double play in the second.

It all came apart in the third inning when Matt Wallner got hold of a 2-0 fastball low in the zone with a runner on first and one run already in and drove it just barely over the right-field scoreboard, providing the runs that ultimately proved decisive. One pitch later, Márquez was out of the inning, but after the parade of baserunners in the first three innings, Warren Schaeffer pulled him after just 58 pitches.

Márquez absorbed his 11th loss of the season.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Minnesota’s Royce Lewis extended the Twins’ lead to 6-1 in the eighth inning with a solo home run.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .348 — McMahon’s batting average since July 11 after he opened the month hitting .097 (3-for-31).
