Rockies fall 50 games below .500 as Trevor Story clobbers them

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The 2025 Rockies continued to go where no Colorado baseball team has gone before — and Tuesday night, that meant falling to an unfathomable 50 games below .500 … before the All-Star break.

And it was an old friend who provided the final nudge off the cliff.

Trevor Story, a two-time All-Star with the Rox who decamped for Boston in free agency prior to the 2022 season, broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single that opened the floodgates for a 10-run deluge in the sixth and seventh innings, sealing yet another series defeat for Colorado as the Red Sox pounded the Rox 10-2 on Tuesday night.

That pushed the Rockies to 21-71. Another loss will give them more defeats before the All-Star Game than any team in major-league history.

Story’s single ended the night for Kyle Freeland, who shut down the Red Sox and for five innings matched Boston’s Brayan Bello, who confounded Rockies batters throughout the night.

But with runners on first and second and two out, Story’s bloop dropped just in front of a chasing Tyler Freeman in shallow right field, scoring Romy Gonzalez from second base.

Juan Mejia relieved Freeland, and in short order allowed a double and a single as Boston quickly padded its lead to 4-0.

In the seventh inning, Jake Bird entered, and saw his recent funk continue. After he retired Connor Wong, he allowed five consecutive Red Sox batters to reach base, culminating in Story’s three-run blast that pushed Boston’s lead to 9-0.

That ended Bird’s night after 17 pitches. An ERA that stood at 1.41 heading into June 13 is now 3.70; for appearances made from that date onward, it’s 12.19, which will certainly affect his potential value on the market as the trade deadline nears.

Meanwhile, Bello went the distance, striking out 10 Rockies while holding them to five hits and a walk. Colorado didn’t finally break through until the ninth inning, when Hunter Goodman hit his 17th home run of the season, a two-run shot over the Green Monster.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Freeland was nothing short of exquisite for five innings, roaring through the Red Sox lineup, holding them to just two hits and a walk.

Only in the fourth inning did he get into trouble, but Orlando Arcia got him out of it, nabbing a line drive from Story and flipping the ball to Ryan Ritter for a double play.

But Freeland has been the victim of some nasty luck this season, and that struck in the form of Story’s soft bloop. That ended Freeland’s night after 88 pitches.

With no run support, that was all it took to drop Freeland to 1-10.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Gonzalez tripled in the bottom of the seventh to extend Boston’s lead to 5-0.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 10 — Consecutive Rockies retired by Bello to open the game.
