Rockies drop third in a row, absorb 60th defeat

Rockies Report, Game 77:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Jordan Beck put the Rockies in front 2-1 with a first-inning homer, but Arizona clawed back over the successive innings and seized control on Gerardo Perdomo’s two-run fifth-inning homer off Jimmy Herget, riding that to a 5-3 win over Colorado on Saturday night.

Perdomo turned on an inside changeup from Herget and blasted it into the right-field stands, and then Arizona’s bullpen helped ensure that it stood up from there, as Colorado went scoreless from the fourth inning onward.

A crowd of 34,076 saw Rockies batters strike out 11 times in the loss, which was Colorado’s third in a row after a four-game winning streak during a 4-3 road trip.

The Rockies fell to 17-60. They are 7-45 against teams with a winning record — including Arizona — and 10-15 against sub-.500 teams.

That discrepancy is a bit of a problem, considering that their next 10 games — and 64 of their final 85 — are against teams with winning records.

If they lose one of their next four games, they will officially reach midseason on pace to post the worst record of the 162-game era.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It was another short start for Carson Palmquist, who now has failed to go five innings in six of his seven major-league starts.

Relieved after four innings and 62 pitches, he gave up a home run to Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez — an opposite-field shot off an 81-MPH cutter — but left with no decision as he prevented the Diamondbacks from pulling away.

He allowed a pair of walks and four hits over the course of his four innings, yielding three runs — all earned. His pitch count was the lowest of his seven MLB starts to date, but his four strikeouts represented his second-highest tally.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Michael Toglia, Mickey Moniak and Sam Hilliard all struck out with Ryan McMahon on third base in the bottom of the ninth.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1 — Number of hits for the bottom four spots in the lineup Saturday night, including an 0-for-9 performance from the 7-8-9 spots. Friday night, the last four spots went 7-for-15.
