Rockies overpowered by Diamondbacks barrage, fall to 17-59

Rockies Report, Game 76:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A six-run fourth-inning Rockies deluge that included a pair of home runs and a two-RBI double from Hunter Goodman was followed by eight consecutive Arizona runs over the following four innings, allowing the Diamondbacks to pull away for a 14-8 win in front of 31,851 at Coors Field on Friday night.

Colorado’s onslaught briefly allowed the Rox to turn a 6-1 deficit into a 7-6 lead. In addition to Goodman’s double, Ryan McMahon and Mickey Moniak provided the big jolts with the two home runs in the fourth inning. McMahon’s home run — his 12th of the season — was a solo shot.

Moniak’s blast — his 10th — also brought home Brenton Doyle, who had doubled. It was part of a 2-for-4 night for Moniak, who nudged his OPS to .785.

But after two pitches into the fifth inning, the lead was gone. Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez turned on a knuckle curve that Austin Gomber left in the zone and deposited it 405 feet away over the leftt-field fence to tie the score. Ildemaro Vargas subsequently put the Snakes in front to stay on a two-run shot that also brought home Tim Tawa.

That was the end of Gomber’s evening, but Arizona’s attack continued at the expense of Colorado’s bullpen. Ryan Ro;ison, Juan Mejia and Anthony Molina handled the final 4 1/3 innings; none emerged unscathed. Rolison had a balk; Molina had a pitch-time violation.

It was just that kind of night.

Colorado fell to 17-59. This was the Rockies’ third loss in four games so far this season against Arizona.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Gomber didn’t replicate the dominance he displayed last Sunday at Atlanta’s Truist Park in his first 2025 start, coming home to Coors Field and finding himself on the business end of an Arizona barrage.

He frequently found himself in trouble early. Four of five leadoff batters reached base — three of them with extra-base hits. He couldn’t work his way out of trouble; he didn’t strike out a single Arizona batter.

The Diamondbacks attacked Gomber early in counts and found success; Ketel Marte’s third-inning home run — a three-run shot to left field — and Jose Herrera’s RBI double counted among the damage done with first-pitch swings.

The loss was Gomber’s first of the season.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Ketel Marte brought home Vargas and Jose Herrera on a one-out double in the seventh inning, stretching Arizona’s lead to a football-esque 13-7.

NUMBERS TO NOTE: 7-for-15 — How the bottom four spots in the order fared for the Rockies. Doyle, Moniak and Ryan Ritter each had a pair of hits.

WHAT’S NEXT: The second game of the three-game weekend series, which will see Carson Palmquist look for his first win as a major-leaguer. Merrill Kelly starts for Arizona. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. MDT.
