Rockies tie club single-game record with 7 home runs — including a pair for Toglia

Rockies Report, Game 73:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: In a mammoth display, the Rockies overpowered the Washington Nationals with seven home runs — matching a club single-game record and setting a team road-game record — including two homers for Michael Toglia and Sam Hilliard as Colorado held off Washington for a 10-6 win at Nationals Park on Tuesday night.

Hunter Goodman, who homered twice Monday night — including a game-tying ninth-inning shot — also went yard for the 14th time this season. Ryan McMahon hit his 11th of the year.

Second baseman Thairo Estrada also recorded his first home run in a Colorado uniform, but he suffered what was reported as a right-hand contusion and is considered day-to-day. A fractured right wrist sidelined him for the season’s first two months.

But none of the home runs were more significant than Toglia’s, given that he returned from a stint with AAA Albuquerque on Monday after being sent down following a frustrating start to the season in which he led MLB in strikeout rate.

“Just a couple minor adjustments,” Toglia said Monday. “Getting back to being myself, getting the rhythm and timing again with the fastball and just kind of getting back to what I’ve been doing.”

In his first week with the Isotopes, the numbers weren’t much better, and he posted a .240 average and a .696 OPS.

But seven days ago, he took a pitch low and inside and crushed it over the right-field fence for a grand slam. From that night forward, his average was .316 and his OPS was 1.206, thanks to three home runs over five games.

“Yeah, it was nice to get the numbers to go with it. I felt like I was in a good place regardless of what my statistics were,” Toglia said.

“Feeling good, felt on time and, you know, I was seeing the ball how I wanted to see it.”

Tuesday night, it manifested in the best possible way.

A crowd of 17,232 witnessed Colorado’s win, which improved the Rockies to 16-57 — and also gave them their seventh win in June. With just one more win this month, they’ll match their combined April and May tally.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Antonio Senzatela earned his second win of the season by largely staying out of the trouble that has defined most of his starts this season.

His only trouble came from wild pitches. One scored Luis Garcia Jr. in the first inning for the only run Washington mustered at Senzatela’s expense. It was unearned, as Garcia only reached base when Brenton Doyle dropped his deep fly to left center field, resulting in a three-base error after the ball subsequently rolled along the fence.

Another wild patch advanced Keibert Ruiz to second base in the second inning, but he advanced no further. While Senzatela didn’t have any clean innings, he scattered the baserunners he did allow — three hits and three walks over five innings — and was relieved after 83 pitches.

Jake Bird bounced back from two rough appearances in Atlanta with a clean sixth inning. Tyler Kinley allowed a walk and a hit in the seventh, but escaped from the two-on, one-out jam.

Only Anthony Molina struggled, surrendering five runs — three of which came on a pair of home runs that helped the Nats eventually put the tying run in the on-deck circle after trailing 10-1 midway through the eighth inning.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Victor Vodnik entered in the ninth inning and got Daylen Lile to fly out to left field with two runners on, squelching the Nationals’ chance at a miracle comeback after they’d already put four ninth-inning runs on the board.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .500 — Colorado’s winning percentage since June 2, which includes their only sweep of the season.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rox look for their first four-game winning streak of the season as they seek to keep the Nats reeling to an 11th consecutive loss. Germán Márquez and Mitchell Parker will square off. First pitch is at 4:45 p.m. MDT.
