Rockies lose 22nd consecutive series as Mets pound them

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Antonio Senzatela has more losses than Colorado has wins.

Senzatela became just the fifth pitcher in the last 40 years to take 10 losses before the 60th game of the season, surrendering seven runs — all earned — in the first four innings as Colorado fell for a seventh consecutive time, 8-2 to the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Senzatela’s 10th loss dropped Colorado to 9-49.

Ezequiel Tovar gave the Rox a burst of hope early with his third home run of the season, a shot to left field in the top of the first inning.

But that would be the last Colorado baserunner until the seventh inning, as the Rox had no answer for Mets starter Kodai Senga’s forkball. Meanwhile, New York piled four runs on Senzatela in the first inning, rendering any Rox hope short-lived.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

When Senzatela stepped onto the mound in the bottom of the first inning, he had a 1-0 lead thanks to Tovar’s solo home run.

But the first three Mets he faced reached base — a common problem for Senzatela this year as he has spent much of his time on the mound dancing around traffic — and after he struck out Pete Alonso, Brett Baty lined a triple to the wall that was just out of Brenton Doyle’s reach, clearing the bases and starting the deluge.

This was the ninth time in Senzatela’s last 10 starts that he has allowed at least four earned runs. He lasted just four innings and 82 pitches.

While he had limited home runs through most of May — just two in five May starts — he matched that on back-to-back fourth-inning pitches that pushed the Mets’ lead to 7-1.

Senzatela’s WHIP now sits at 1.98 for the season.

He was credited with his 10th loss of the season.

He became only the 10th pitcher in the last 40 years to absorb 10 defeats before the 60th game of the season, joining Paul Wagner (Pittsburgh, 1995), Mike Maroth (Detroit, 2003), Kip Wells (St. Louis, 2007) and Joan Adon (Washington, 2022) with this dubious distinction, per Baseball Reference.
