Rockies offense goes back into deep freeze after 14-run outburst

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The better Chase Dollander pitches, the less run support he gets.

For the fourth time in nine starts since being called up and making his debut on April 6, the Rockies’ 2023 first-round pick held an opponent to two or fewer runs. But in each of those games, the Rockies offense has scored two or fewer runs.

Sunday, they were shut out entirely. They threatened late, loading the bases in the ninth inning. But that threat died in the glove of Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, and Colorado fell, 1-0.

For the offense, it was back into the deep freeze after the 14-run eruption Saturday.

Colorado bracketed that performance with a pair of shutouts against the Diamondbacks, falling to 8-38.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The persistent spot of bother for Dollander has been a susceptibility to home runs, and that bit him early Sunday.

Ten pitches into the game, Ketel Marte put Dollander in a 1-0 hole, turning on a fastball and blasting it into the right-field stands. It was the 10th home run allowed by Dollander so far this season,.

That was the only run he allowed, although he was limited to 4 2/3 innings because he struggled to work economically; he reached 98 pitches despite not making it out of the fifth inning.

The first inning was the primary culprit; Dollander struck out three batters, but allowed the home run and walked a pair, needing 38 pitches to get through the frame. Dollander was at 56 pitches through two innings and 68 through three; by then the die was cast.

Shutout work from the bullpen carried the Rockies the rest of the way; Ryan Rolison continued his stellar work since being called up, holding Arizona to just a single hit over 2 1/3 innings. Tyler Kinley walked a pair and struck out one in the eighth inning.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Perdomo caught Michael Toglia’s bases-loaded line drive for the third out in the ninth inning to clinch the game.

ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 18 — Consecutive series dropped by the Rockies dating back to last September.
