Rockies, Freeland go down screaming as they hit loss No. 100

DENVER — Rockies Report, Game 139:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: In a game that began with fireworks in the form of a benches-clearing shouting-match-turned fracas, the San Francisco Giants clubbed four home runs at the expense of three different Rockies pitchers, dooming them to a 7-4 loss that confirmed what has long been inevitable: the club’s third-consecutive 100-loss season.

Colorado had never lost 100 games in any of its first 30 seasons of existence before its most recent three campaigns. This time, the Rox hit the mark with 23 games remaining.

It’s bad, but not as bad as the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who got to 100 losses with 31 games left on the schedule. Colorado managed to delay the milestone with some bursts of life, including a 7-2 stretch in August. But the Rox have struggled since then, losing 10 of 12.

After Kyle Freeland’s ejection following the first-inning donnybrook, Antonio Senzatela entered in his new bullpen role. He delivered 4 2/3 innings of strong work, nearly emerging without allowing a run until Casey Schmitt took him deep in the fifth inning.

Angel Chivilli relieved him and quickly allowed a single and a two-run homer as the Giants extended their lead to 5-1. But Hunter Goodman pulled the Rockies back, first delivering an RBI single in the fifth, then launching a hanging Jose Butto slider 440 feet deep in the left-field stands for his 27th home run of the season to narrow the gap to 5-4 in the seventh.

But in the following half-inning, the Rockies barfed it back. San Francisco catcher Patrick Bailey golfed a Jaden Hill changeup over the right-field fence with a runner on first base, pushing the Giants’ lead back to three runs, at the final margin of 7-4.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Freeland barely got warmed up, but as it turned out, it was enough for him to absorb his 14th loss of the season, matching his career high set in 2023.

The pitch that Rafael Devers took deep was a sweeper in the heart of the strike zone. When Devers paused to admire it, that set Freeland off. The subsequent reaction ensured that the eighth pitch would be the last one he threw on Tuesday night.

Nevertheless, it was enough for his 36th loss in the last three seasons; in that span, only Patrick Corbin and JP Sears have more (37 each).

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Bailey went deep off Hill in the eighth to extend San Francisco’s lead back to three runs.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 3.52 — Senzatela’s ERA in two bullpen appearances since being moved out of the rotation last week.
