Rockies’ Kyle Freeland, two Giants ejected as dugouts clear at Coors Field

DENVER — On “Bark in the Park” night at Coors Field, Kyle Freeland just wanted to join in.

When Rafael Devers slowly trotted away from the batters box and casually flipped his bat following a two-run homer eight pitches into Tuesday’s game between the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants, the veteran Rockies starter barked back at Devers.

And with that burst of wrath from Freeland, it was on. Chaos ensured.

Kyle Freeland exploded on Devers after his two-run blast to the right-field stands put the Giants ahead 2-0. Umpire Phil Cuzzi attempted to guide Freeland away from Devers, but as he did so, San Francisco third baseman Matt Chapman shoved Freeland in the arm and chest.

With that, matters turned up a notch; both dugouts quickly emptied. Even the pitchers from Colorado’s bullpen dashed into the infield.

When the dust eventually settled, Freeland was among three players ejected. But he was the only Colorado player tossed; two San Francisco players were sent to the showers for escalating matters.

Giants shortstop Willy Adames followed Chapman’s shove further by going at Freeland. Kyle Farmer, manning first base for the Rockies, dashed in to separate Adames from the pitcher.

When it seemed like matters had cooled, the melee spilled around the infield and into foul territory. Rockies infielder Ryan Ritter had to restrain Kyle Freeland at one point; Freeland was eventually guided away. Devers and Freeland continued yelling at each other amid the chaos.

After players returned to their dugouts, Devers stood on first base for several minutes before finally circling the bases.

Beleaguered ex-starter Antonio Senzatela — removed from the rotation last week — entered to replace Freeland. He allowed a hit but completed the inning with no further damage.

But it’s doubtful that anything Senzatela does will be remembered as much as Freeland’s reaction and the wild scenes of the first inning.
