Rockies drop series to Orioles as Bernabel’s solo homer is their only run

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Rookie Warming Bernabel’s first major-league home run in the second inning represented the entirety of the Rockies’ offense as they dropped the series finale in Baltimore by a 5-1 count to the Orioles on Sunday.

Bernabel’s blast capped a weekend in which he went 2-for-6 in his introduction to the major leagues after being called up from AAA Albuquerque, where he logged a .301/.356/.450 line over 75 games and 316 plate appearances.

That marked a significant improvement on the form Bernabel. displayed in 2024 at AA Hartford, where he logged a .656 OPS.

He started at first base Saturday and Sunday, moving over to third base in the eighth inning Saturday night.

The 23-year-old’s play over the last two days was a bright spot in a dim close to the series that saw Baltimore outscore the Rox 23-1 after Colorado took the series opener Friday night.

Colorado went 0-for-7 with in runners scoring position on Sunday and struck out 12 times, squandering two-on opportunities in the first, fifth and seventh innings.

The Rockies are 27-78.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Austin Gomber couldn’t keep matters under control Sunday, issuing three walks and plunking Ramón Laureano before being relieved after 78 pitches and 4 1/3 innings.

A two-RBI Dylan Carlson single that scored Cedric Mullins from third base and a sliding Colby Mayo from second in the bottom of the second inning put Baltimore in front; a two-run Tyler O’Neill homer in the fourth inning added to the damage.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Orlando Arcia and Tyler Freeman could not advance Bernabel and Austin Nola after they reached base in the top of the seventh to set up a two-on, one-out scenario that could have gotten the Rox back into the contest.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .146 — Freeman’s average since hitting a high-water mark of .345 on July 9. He’s gone 6-for-41 since then, including 1-for-11 this weekend.

WHAT’S NEXT: It’s on to Cleveland to face the Guardians for a three-game series. Slade Cecconi starts against Colorado’s Bradley Blalock. First pitch at Progressive Field is scheduled for 4:40 p.m. MDT.
