Rockies’ three-game win streak ends in 18-0 laugher

Rockies Report, Game 104:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: It started badly and got worse for the Rockies as their three-game winning streak ended in an 18-0 debacle at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday.

Colorado became the first team since the 1969 San Diego Padres — a first-year expansion team — and only the second in the modern era to lose two shutout games by at least 18 runs in the same season. They fell 21-0 to the Padres on May 10.

The Rox also became the first team since the 2002 Cincinnati Reds to lose at least two games by at least 18 runs in a single season and the 10th in the modern era.

Baltimore starter Trevor Rogers befuddled the Rockies, holding them to a mere Thairo Estrada second-inning single and an Ezequiel Tovar seventh-inning walk. Rogers faced one batter above the minimum and never allowed a Rockie beyond first base.

No Colorado batter advanced beyond first until Warming Bernabel capped his major-league debut with a ninth-inning single on a high chopper to first base. He advanced to second after a Tyler Freeman walk, but that was all as the Rox failed to dent the scoreboard.

The defeat to the Baltimore Oiroles was a garden-variety rough night until matters spiraled in a nine-run seventh inning.

Absorbing much of the damage in that frame was the recently acquired Nick Anderson, who made his Rockies debut. He entered with one run already home, runners on first and second and no one out.

After allowing a walk, it was death by paper cuts. Six of the next eight Orioles reached base via singles or doubles before he finally got the third out when Colton Cowser flew out to center field.

Utility man Kyle Farmer handled the eighth inning and allowed a home run to Alex Jackson on a 47-MPH pitch, but didn’t allow another run in an appearance that evoked memories of Jacob Stallings’ work in the 21-0 howler against San Diego in May.

Coincidentally, Stallings was in the Orioles’ lineup on Saturday; he went 1-for-5, delivering an RBI single in the seventh-inning deluge.

The last time the Rox lost this badly, they won the next day. Of course, they also fired their manager immediately afterward. Surely no such fate awaits interim manager Warren Schaeffer on Sunday.

Colorado is 27-77.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It wasn’t a disastrous first inning for Antonio Senzatela, but his woes out of the blocks returned as he hit Jordan Westburg, walked Gunnar Henderson and allowed a Ryan O’Hearn RBI single to give Baltimore the only run it needed before settling down and escaping the inning on a 5-4-3 double play.

Home runs did the rest of the damage. Tyler O’Neill turned on a fastball that was in the lower middle portion of the strike zone to push Baltimore’s edge to 3-0 in the second inning; an inside fastball to Cedric Mullins just cleared the right-field wall with two on in the fourth inning; his 100th career home run doubled Baltimore’s lead.

The fourth inning ended his night. The loss was Senzatela’s MLB-leading 14th this season.

It got worse for the bullpen; Ryan Rolison worked a scoreless fifth before struggling in the sixth. The bottom fell out for Zach Agnos and Anderson in the seventh.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Mullins pushed Baltimore’s lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
