The Colorado Rockies set a pair of franchise records on the strikeout front over the weekend, setting the new mark for most K’s in a nine inning game on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves (19) and most K’s in a two-game span on Sunday (35). After Sunday’s win over Atlanta, the Rockies organization made the decision to recall Michael Toglia up to the big leagues after his short stint in Triple-A with the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Toglia, 26, was sent down to the minor leagues back in mid-May because his .391 strikeout rate led all qualified players in the MLB by a wide margin. Despite playing only in 54 games for the Rockies so far this season, his 81 strikeouts are the 12th-most by any hitter in the league. Minnesota’s Bryon Buxton, who has also played 54 games, is the next-highest player on the list with the same amount of games as Toglia, with just 66 strikeouts.

After a rough start to his 2025 season in the big leagues, Toglia was able to somewhat find his stride, bumping his batting average up to .273 in 51 plate appearances (was hitting .194 for the Rockies in 207 PA). His OPS jumped from .615 to .921 while his strikeout rate dropped to .294.

On Friday, Toglia topped off a four-game stretch that reminded Rockies fans of his true potential despite his struggles this season.

Whenever someone gets brought up to the squad, someone else has to be moved to counterbalance the transaction, and Keston Hiura is the casualty in this exchange, as the club designated him for assignment. Hiura had just four hits in 21 plate appearances for the Rockies in recent weeks with one extra-base hit and one RBI. He was only playing first base on defense for the Rockies in the eight games he played in, but with Toglia primarily being a first baseman as well, the fit wasn’t there.

Warren Schaeffer hasn’t announced the starting lineup yet for Monday’s bout with the Washington Nationals in the nation’s capital, but Toglia should make an appearance sometime during the four-game series. First pitch for Monday’s game is at 4:45 p.m. MDT.
