COLORADO ROCKIES

Rockies look to pile on as Dodgers spiral

The Dodgers are as vulnerable as they've been all season — and the Rockies can climb into fourth place

The two-time reigning world champions Los Angeles Dodgers are limping into 20th and Blake, and the Colorado Rockies would love to induce some more pain.

Los Angeles (74-51) arrives at Coors Field on Monday for three games looking nothing like the juggernaut that ran away with the division a month ago. The Dodgers are 7-13 over their last 20 games, 13-17 over their last 30, and just dropped the series to Milwaukee at home. They still hold first place in the West, but they’ve fallen out of the bye and into third in the league as a whole.

Colorado (50-74) just took two of three at Oracle Park, capped by a 13-7 blowout on Sunday, to finish off a winning trip where they went 5-4. The Rockies didn’t quite climb out of last place — one game still separates them from the fourth-place Giants — but the arrow is at least pointing up instead of straight down. Zac Veen continues to rake since his recall from Triple-A, and Jake McCarthy remains one of the hottest hitters in the lineup.

Pitching matchups for Rockies-Dodgers

Monday, Aug. 17, 6:40 p.m. MT: Blake Snell (LHP, 0-1, 5.00 ERA, 15 SO) vs. Tomoyuki Sugano (RHP, 12-5, 4.43 ERA, 66 SO). Snell is early in his return and still building up. Sugano has been Colorado’s quiet workhorse — his 12 wins are best on the club.

Tuesday, Aug. 18, 6:40 p.m. MT: Eric Lauer (LHP, 7-6, 4.67 ERA, 63 SO) vs. Ryan Feltner (RHP, 5-6, 5.59 ERA, 61 SO). Feltner won his last start in Arizona, going five innings for the victory. Lauer has been steady but unspectacular for LA.

Wednesday, Aug. 19, 6:40 p.m. MT: Roki Sasaki (RHP, 5-5, 4.46 ERA, 108 SO) vs. Kyle Freeland (LHP, 4-10, 6.27 ERA, 98 SO). Sasaki at Coors Field could be fun, for which side, it’s hard to say. Freeland picked up a win Friday in San Francisco but still needs to string together consistent outings.

The Dodgers are as vulnerable as they’ve been all season. And the Rockies have only been five games under .500 at home. This is a chance for the hot Rockies to take it to the slumping Dodgers and climb into fourth place.
