Rockies felled by second Yankees grand slam in as many nights as they absorb sweep

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: In a tale that has been told many times over the course of this Rockies season, they struggled with runners in scoring position, while the New York Yankees feasted in dealing Colorado a 10-3 defeat to secure a three-game sweep in their series at Yankee Stadium.

Colorado went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position during the series, including 1-for-8 on Thursday night. Meanwhile, the Yankees went 5-for-13 in that scenario, including a 2-RBI single by Spencer Jones and an Anthony Volpe grand slam that punctuated a six-run seventh inning and turned the contest into a pinstripe runaway.

Volpe turned on a Jimmy Herget sinker that settled near the heart of the strike zone and drove it into the second row over the short right-field fence, turning the night into a rout at the Rockies’ expense.

Third baseman Kyle Karros hit his 11th homer of the season in the second inning; it was a solo shot. The Rockies added a run in the seventh on Jake McCarthy’s RBI triple and when Zac Veen scored in the eighth after Adael Amador singled and Jasson Dóminguez made a throwing error.

The Rockies fell to 55-91. They must go .500 in their final 16 games to avoid a fourth-consecutive loss season, which would be the most in succession since the 1962-65 New York Mets opened their history as an expansion club by hitting triple digits in defeats for their initial quartet of seasons.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Starter Ryan Feltner was able to overcome his early struggles and give the Rockies five innings of work — something that seemed unlikely after he allowed four runs on five hits and a walk with a wild pitch in the first two innings of play, which saw him throw 46 pitches.

“Feltner just couldn’t put them away. The kill pitches he tried to throw — he had a fastball up. The off-speed pitch, he didn’t get it down enough. He paid for it,” Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer told media after the game. “In the second inning, he got behind and another two [runs scored].”

But from there, Feltner limited the damage. He allowed just one hit after the Yankees scored twice in the second inning and retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Jones and Volpe delivered the RBI hits that brought home a combined six runs in the seventh inning, putting the Rox in a 10-2 hole.
