The Colorado Rockies will look to avoid a sixth-straight loss on Wednesday in Houston and they’ll give the ball to Jose Quintana to start their effort. The veteran lefty returns from injury but taking his place on the injured list is another veteran left-hander, Kyle Freeland.
Freeland was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday in San Diego due to left posterior shoulder soreness. The injury was a late development — the Rockies were unable to get the change on the lineup card, resulting in Freeland technically starting the game without throwing a pitch. Right-hander Jimmy Herget warmed up quickly and opened the bottom of the first against the Padres.
Freeland, who turns 33 next month, was 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA in three starts over 15 2/3 innings before the injury. He had been one of the few bright spots in Colorado’s rotation to begin the season.
Quintana landed on the injured list with a right hamstring strain on March 30, one day after allowing two runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in his Rockies’ debut, a 4-3 road loss to the Miami Marlins. He went 11-7 with a 3.96 ERA for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025.
Quintana threw a successful 21-pitch bullpen session Sunday and said he could re-enter the rotation as early as Wednesday, which is what will happen.
Colorado swept a three-game series against Houston last week in Denver but has dropped five straight since.

-Placed LHP Kyle Freeland on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 13 (left shoulder inflammation).Quintana will make his second start of the…
