The Colorado Rockies are still seeking a 10th win now into the month of June, but they did get some good news on Monday, with the imminent return of Chase Dollander.
The rookie right-hander out of Tennessee has struggled a bit in his first eight starts in the bigs, yet two of the Rockies’ nine wins have come with 23-year-old on the bump. He’s got a 2-5 record, which is easily the best among Colorado’s starters with a 6.28 ERA and he’s striking out a batter an inning.
Dollander last pitched for the Rockies on May 18, but hit the injured list soon after with forearm tightness. It was described as precautionary.
He did not undergo a rehab stint and comes straight back to the bigs a few weeks later to start in Miami on Tuesday, the team announced. He’ll face off with the struggling former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.
Dollander was the No. 8 prospect in all of the sport coming into the season, according to Baseball America. He was taken with the ninth pick in the 2023 MLB Draft and has shot through the Rockies’ farm system.
Dollander is the first of what the Rockies hope are a new wave of pitchers, as they’re still mostly relying on arms that came up almost a decade ago in German Marquez, Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela. All three are having horrible years.
The Rockies sit at 9-50 as they begin play in Florida on Monday.
