Rockies fire Bud Black after historically bad start

One of the longest tenured managers in Major League Baseball has been canned, as the Colorado Rockies relieved Bud Black of his duties on Sunday.

The Rockies are off to a horrible start, but funny enough, got one of their rare seven wins earlier in the day. Black had been on the job since 2017.

Former Rockies minor league manager at a few stops and current third base coach, Warren Schaffer, will take over in the meantime. Mike Redmond was also let go.

Rockies owner Dick Monfort released the following statement:

“Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable. Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better.

While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball.”

“I want to thank Bud Black and Mike Redmond for their contributions to the organization across their eight years here. I appreciate their hard work and dedication and wish them nothing but the best going forward.”

Black was 544-690 while leading the Rockies, taking them to two playoff trips in 2017 and 2018, but the team had lost 100 games in each of the last two years,
