Rockies infielder, three-time NL all-star Daniel Murphy retiring

Following 12 MLB seasons, his final two with the Colorado Rockies, three-time all-star infielder Daniel Murphy is hanging up his cleats.

In an interview with SportsNet New York on Friday, the 35-year-old Murphy said he was retiring from playing the “beautiful game” of baseball.

“It’s beautiful. It can teach you about so many things. And all I can say is, thank you,” Murphy said.

In 12 seasons at the major league level, Murphy tallied 1,572 hits, 138 home runs and a career WAR of 1.8 for four MLB teams — the Rockies, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals.

Murphy signed a two-year deal with the Rockies in late 2018 worth a reported $24 million. During his tenure in Denver, he played in 172 games, knocking in 94 RBI and notching a .269 batting average, .426 slugging percentage and a WAR of -0.9.
