NHL postpones Avalanche games through at least Feb. 11

The NHL has postponed the Colorado Avalanche season until at least Feb. 11, the league announced via a press release Thursday night.

The ruling comes as a result of several players recently entering the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, including Avs captain Gabe Landeskog.

According to the release, the decision was made by medical groups from the Avalanche, NHLPA and the league in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Health, which determined “more caution was warranted while the parties are analyzing test results in the coming days.”

The team’s facilities have been closed, effective immediately, until further notice, and the league is “reviewing and revising” the Avs’ schedule with a decision on next weeks games expected in the coming days.

“The Colorado organization has, and will continue to follow, all recommended guidelines aimed at protecting the health and safety of its players, staff and community at large as set by the NHL, local, state and national agencies,” the NHL said in the release.

The news comes 24 hours after the league postponed the final matchup of four-game set between the Avs and Wild after five Minnesota players were placed in the COVID-19 protocol dues to exposure to the virus.

Avalanche center Tyson Jost was also placed on the COVID-19 protocol list Wednesday, followed by Landeskog’s inclusion Thursday.

Colorado had been slated to take on the Blues in St. Louis this weekend before returning to Denver for a pair of games with the Arizona Coyotes.
