The Denver Broncos quarterback situation will obviously be a major question mark heading into the 2021 season.
Will new Broncos general manager George Paton make a trade or draft “his guy” at No. 9? Matthew Stafford is now with the Los Angeles Rams, and a trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson seems like a long shot.
With the Broncos quarterback situation far from ideal, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to give Drew Lock another year, with a full offseason, to prove he can be the future under center.
Inaccurate, injury prone, and with habit of turning the ball over too much, Drew Lock did not have a great first year starting. But with that said, he showed flashes. And another year in the same offense could be what he needs.
Lock has never had continuity in his coaching staff, going back to college. The Broncos knew he was a bit of a project drafting him in the second round, so letting him grow in the same offense will help his development.
Denver is about to enter a lame duck period in 2021. The team has no owner, John Elway and Joe Ellis are in the final years of their contracts, and Vic Fangio could be on his way out.
Should the Broncos really acquire a new quarterback only to potentially have changes in the coaching staff, front office and ownership over the next year?
The smart move is to give Lock another year. If he fails, blow it all up under new ownership. Paton will still have five years left on his contract as GM.
