Dreams of Matthew Stafford in Broncos colors doused by trade

Drew Lock’s hold on the Denver Broncos quarterback role is safe for now.

In the first blockbuster trade of the NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions will reportedly ship quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for QB Jared Goff. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, who broke the news, reported the Rams also will send two first-round and a third-round pick.

While Stafford ultimately ended up in Los Angeles, the Denver Broncos were engaged in talks to bring the Lions quarterback to the Mile High City.

Per 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis, multiple proposals were on the table but new Denver GM George Paton was “reluctant” to part with the team’s “young core,” including Drew Lock.

Said Paton during his debut press conference last week:

“We’re going to be aggressive, but we’re not going to be reckless in player acquisition. We’re going to leave no stone unturned.”

On Thursday, before this weekend’s trade, Schefter told “Schlereth & Evans” that Goff could be available via trade along with Stafford.

Disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has also been established as a possible target for the Broncos, should they look to move on from starter Drew Lock.

Though the outlook on a trade for Watson likely has changed, here’s what the 104.3 The Fan on-air staff said Denver could offer Houston for the all-pro quarterback.
