Wyndham Clark jumped out to a big early lead at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island and never really looked back, taking his second U.S. Open title Sunday.

The Denver native, Clark, became the ninth wire-to-wire winner in U.S. Open history, closing with a 3-over 73 for a 276 total. His lead shrank to a single stroke more than once as Sam Burns — who finished second, one back — narrowly missed birdie putts on Nos. 17 and 18 in the group ahead.

For a moment, it looked like Clark might become the first to blow more than a five-stroke lead in the final round of a major since Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters.

It sure looked that way after his tee shot on the par-5 16th sailed into the tall grass left. Instead, it became his signature moment. Clark somehow got up and down with a stunning recovery, draining a 25-foot putt for birdie to push his lead back to two.

A few holes later, he closed it out with a short putt and went to hug his father, Randall, who surprised him by catching an early flight from Denver to be there on Father’s Day.

It’s the second U.S. Open title for Clark, 32, who won first back in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club. He’s now won twice in just six career starts at the national open — only John McDermott (four), Walter Hagen (five) and Ernie Els (five) reached two titles in fewer, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Maybe the most remarkable part: It comes a year after a 2025 to forget, when Clark missed the cut and later apologized for smashing Oakmont Country Club’s 121-year-old lockers.
