Denver native Wyndham Clark expands his lead at the U.S. Open

Wyndham Clark entered Saturday’s third round at the U.S. Open with a four-shot lead.

He ended the day even farther away from the pack.

The Denver native shot an even-par 70 in Saturday’s third round at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island, but that was good enough to move six strokes clear of the rest of the field in the year’s third major, held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island.

All of the competitors who were tied for second place after 36 holes fell back in the pack, allowing Clark to expand his lead.

Five golfers sit in a tie for second place at 1-under par, including Scottie Scheffler, who is looking for a career Grand Slam; the U.S. Open is the only major he has yet to win.

Clark’s day was bolstered by his performance on the two par-5s on the course. He birdied the fifth hole and eagled the 16th. Clark also logged a birdie on the par-4 14th, while recording bogeys at the first, eighth, 15th and 18th holes.

He shot a one-over 36 on the front nine before coming back in under par on the back nine.

Clark entered the tournament at the No. 34 spot in the World Golf Ranking. His win at the Byron Nelson last month was his first PGA Tour triumph in over two years, since he won three tournaments in a nine-month span from May 2023 through February 2024.

As pointed out by the tournament’s official account on the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, no golfer who led a U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills after 36 holes ever finished with the title.

Barring a massive collapse in Sunday’s final round, that trend is about to change, as the 32-year-old Valor Christian product sits just 18 holes away from his second U.S. Open title in four years.
