Denver native Wyndham Clark bolts to four-shot lead through two rounds at the U.S. Open

Wyndham Clark enters Saturday’s third round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in tin an ideal position, four clear of the field after following up his opening-round, 6-under-par 64 with a 1-under 69.

But history isn’t on his side. As mentioned by the tournament’s official account on the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, no 36-hole leader in a U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills has ever gone on to win.

That said, no one had ever shot a seven-under par 133 in the first two rounds of a U.S. Open at the Suffolk County, N.Y. course until Clark’s blitzkrieg.

Nevertheless, the Denver native and Valor Christian product felt he could have done better.

“I really felt like I could be in double digits, but you know, the great thing about that is I didn’t feel like I had my best, and I still am leading as of right now,” Clark told ESPN. “Hopefully I can bring my A-game on the weekend.”

If that’s not his “A-game” at the notoriously rugged course, what is?

Clark completed his final two holes early Friday morning after play was suspended Thursday evening due to darkness. He had a quick turnaround before beginning his second round at 7:41 a.m. EDT Friday morning.

He’s seeking his second U.S. Open title in four years. When Clark won the 2023 tournament at Los Angeles Country Club, he didn’t take the lead until the third round.
