The Denver Broncos didn’t have an explosive touchdown nor did they have a blowout win — that all changed Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals thanks to some big plays from quarterback Bo Nix.

The maligned third-year quarterback got right in the 30-16 win, on the back of two long touchdowns — one that set a Broncos record.

Nix’s second quarter 62-yard scramble was the longest run of any kind by a Broncos quarterback. He hit his career high top speed of 19.9 mph as no Cardinal came within four yards of ball carrier until he was crossing the goal line.

Nix’s dash was actually the longest run by an NFL quarterback in four years — when Justin Fields ran the rock 67 yards for a score.

“I think it answers our question: ‘Can he still run,'” Sean Payton said after the game. “I mean, we got a match coverage, and so it just happened to be a route where we were pushing someone to the flag, someone on a deep corner, someone on a sail, the back going that way, and believe it or not, the tight end. If you if you watch the all 22, you’re going to see a point where he climbs, and from the center over, I think all the eligibles are right, and and it wasn’t. It was more of a match coverage, so it was good, good decision, big play.”

“Been a while I had one at Stanford my first year at Oregon,” Nix said. “Not often you get that much open space. That was really cool… my read took me down because it was man to man and once you start running you’re like a running back at that point.”

Nix also joined Fields, as well as Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton and Ace Parker later in the game by throwing for a 52-yard touchdown to RJ Harvey. That group of five are the only players to to run for and throw for a 50-yard touchdown in the same game in NFL history.

Nix finished the day 15 of 29 passing with 222 yards through the air and one touchdown then added another 73 yards and a his score on the ground.

The Broncos and Nix can get their lick back against Kansas City next week when Denver plays host to the Chiefs in a massive AFC West bout.
