Broncos bring back training-camp receiver to practice squad

Rookie wide receiver Cam Ross was the only player signed by the Broncos among six who tried out on Tuesday.

The Broncos brought back rookie wide receiver Cam Ross on Tuesday, signing him to the practice squad.

The re-signing of Ross isn’t a surprise in the wake of the injury Pat Bryant suffered on Sunday. If Bryant is sidelined for the near term, the domino effect would ensure that the Broncos needed another wide receiver in practice for scout-team purposes, and Ross’ familiarity and knowledge of the nomenclature would make him an ideal fit for such a role.

Ross had 50 yards from scrimmage during the preseason, including a 28-yard run. He also averaged 23.5 yards on two kickoff returns and tallied 17 yards on five punt-return opportunities.

To make room for Ross, the Broncos released edge rusher Jahfari Harvey from the practice squad. He joined the team last week as fellow edge rusher Dondrea Tillman did not participate in practices due to a hamstring injury that ultimately kept him out of the 24-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

But just as notable as those moves was the Broncos’ tryout list for the day.

BRONCOS HAD SIX PLAYERS IN FOR TRYOUTS

Ross was the only player off the tryout list immediately signed. He was one of four wide receivers brought in for the day; the others were San José State product Nick Nash, USC’s Brenden Rice and ex Louisville wideout Jamari Thrash.

Denver also brought in two defensive backs for tryouts: Paul Manning and Ayo Oyelola.

Manning was with the team during OTAs and minicamp after receiving a tryout during rookie minicamp in May. The team waived him with an injury settlement on June 16.

With Pat Surtain II working his way back from the ankle injury he suffered Sunday, the Broncos may need another cornerback. The team has two on its practice squad: rookie Brent Austin and first-year player Sean Fresch Jr., who first joined the Broncos from the St. Louis Battlehawks of the United Football League.
