UFL adds Colorado team, set to kick off in 2027

Denver Gold anyone? Spring football is back in the Centennial State, this time in Colorado Springs.

The United Football League announced on Wednesday that Olympic City USA is their newest city for a franchise, starting play in the spring of 2027. It was one of four new markets set to launch over the next two seasons. Colorado’s team will play at Weidner Field, a professional sports and entertainment venue in downtown Colorado Springs that is home to the USL’s Switchbacks. The new team’s first game will be on April 11 on ABC however we won’t have to wait that long to find out what the squad will look like as the team name, colors, logos, and brand identity will be unveiled at a public event taking place at Weidner Field on Oct. 25.

“Bringing professional football to Colorado Springs is a vote of confidence in our city and in what we have built downtown,” Mayor Yemi Mobolade said in a news release. “A UFL team will put Colorado Springs in front of a national audience, bring fans to Weidner Field, and give southern Colorado a professional football team to call its own. We are proud to welcome the UFL to the foot of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain, and we look forward to seeing our community make this team its own.”

Colorado is one of two new markets joining the UFL for the 2027 season, alongside Rhode Island, while Utah and Oklahoma will join the league in 2028 as the UFL expands to 10 teams.

“2026 was an incredible year for the UFL, and seeing the response from our fans, players, and partners has made what comes next even more exciting,” said UFL Co-Owner Mike Repole in a news release. “There is a real energy around this league right now, and we’re thrilled to bring that energy to four new markets. We said in July that our next step was finding the right markets, venues, and fan bases where we can work with local leaders to build the strongest franchises for today and for the future, and we believe Colorado, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, and Utah represent those qualities.”

Weidner Field opened in 2021 and has hosted some big events like the 2024 USL Championship Final and NCAA Division II Championships. The venue is nearly 1,000 feet higher above sea level than Denver, making it a tough environment for visiting squads.

In recent years, the UFL has become quite the pipeline for the NFL. The Broncos have four former UFL players right now: long snapper Mitchell Fraboni and linebacker Dondrea Tillman, while wide receiver Michael Bandy and defensive back Sam Fresch are on the practice squad.
