Sean Payton defends Davis Webb and Bo Nix, ‘dirt on a ton of people’s hands’

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton called the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs “a slap in the face” earlier this week.

And on Thursday, Payton was asked about specific folks who had a rough night.

That includes Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb who left a lot to be desired his first time calling plays in the NFL. Plus, QB Bo Nix, who got off to a brutal start in year three.

But Payton wasn’t going to chuck anyone under the bus. In fact, he defended Webb and Nix, basically saying no one in the organization had a good night.

The first answer was about Webb, whose offense managed a lousy 10 points in the 31-10 beatdown by the Chiefs.

“Listen, I think that game didn’t go for any of us as we would’ve hoped. Right? I mean, I said in the meeting this morning, there was dirt on a ton of people’s hands, starting with me. And so, we’ve got to learn from that. It’s a quick turnaround, you can’t get to the next game quick enough, and I’m sure it’s the same way for (Webb),” Sean Payton said.

Yes, every coach, player and fan in Broncos Country is ready for Week 2 on Sunday against the Jaguars.

It can’t get here soon enough, especially for Nix, who threw for only 131 yards in Kansas City. He also had an interception and three fumbles, losing one.

Sean Payton was asked about Nix’s tough outing and pulled the same card — this isn’t all on him.

“Certainly appreciate the question and it gets back to, there were just so many guys, watching the tape Tuesday, that probably felt the same way he did,” Payton said.

It’s not necessarily a huge defense of Nix, but Sean Payton is rightfully pointing out that almost everyone on the team had a bad game.

Now, with the test against the Jaguars rapidly approaching, Webb, Nix and the rest of the Broncos have a chance to put the Chiefs in the rearview mirror.

Denver could really use a win — especially one in which the offense is firing on all cylinders.
