Sean Payton calls loss to Chiefs ‘a slap in the face’ after Broncos Super Bowl hype

The Denver Broncos were punched in the mouth by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, something head coach Sean Payton didn’t shy away from on Tuesday.

Almost nothing went right in a humiliating 31-10 loss, sending Denver to 0-1 and leaving a lot of questions early in a season with Super Bowl expectations.

Payton held a conference call with the media and was asked about all the preseason hype going horribly wrong, especially after QB Bo Nix called it a “nasty wake-up call” postgame.

“Well, certainly a slap in the face. When you come off training camp and your offseason program, it’s one thing to lose in a hard fought game where you feel like you played well. I don’t feel like we played up to our standard and certainly that starts with us as coaches, myself,” Sean Payton said.

The Broncos were bullied in ever facet. Denver’s defense missed an alarming 28 tackles and the offense looked stuck in the mud. Ultimately, Payton agreed with Nix’s assessment.

“Yeah, it’s disappointing. That would be a great way to describe it,” Payton said.

Asked if the Broncos would flush this, particularly with a short week and the Jaguars looming on Sunday, Payton said it’s important to take Tuesday to reflect.

“You have to have that honest day… I know it’s a shorter week, but there’s no way we could get past today without looking at the tape and looking at the things that we have to improve on before we even play the next opponent,” Sean Payton said.

It is only one game.

But it’s also one game with a lot of concerning trends.

At least Sean Payton and his QB are acknlowedging what a disaster Monday evening was in Kansas City.

Now it’s up to them and the rest of the team to fix it.
