Rockies losing streak reaches eight games despite six players posting 2-hit nights

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A return home after a bruising six-game road swing to New York and Detroit that extended their away losing streak to 10 games wasn’t enough to stop the team’s recent bleeding, as the wild-card pursuing San Diego Padres sprinted to a 6-1 lead midway through the third inning, then held off a Colorado charge to defeat the Rox 8-7 in front of 14,805 at Coors Field on Monday night.

Colorado kept battling back, with Cole Carrigg, Jake McCarthy, Connor Norby, Hunter Goodman, TJ Rumfield and Kyle Karros each posting two-hit nights. One of Carrigg’s hits was a 424-foot shot to the second level of the right-field stands in the seventh inning off Padres reliever Bradgley Rodriguez.

McCarthy also had a 2-RBI triple in the sixth inning, part of a 3-run frame that pulled Colorado within 6-5.

The Rockies pulled within one run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings — at 6-5, 7-6 and 8-7. But the Padres added a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, ensuring that the Rox remained in chase mode, never tying the game again after being 1-1 after the first inning.

Colorado fell to 55-95 and must go 8-4 in its last 12 games to avoid the club’s fourth-consecutive 100-loss season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Manny Machado started the San Diego onslaught at Sugano’s expense in the first inning with a solo homer, the first of two dingers allowed by Sugano, who has surrendered four homers in his last two starts after yielding three in his previous four trips to the mound.

Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered the other blast, providing half of the runs in San Diego’s second inning of work with a two-out, two-run short that scored Jake Cronenworth and increased the Padres’ lead to 5-1.

Sugano rallied for a pair of scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, allowing him to save Colorado’s bullpen a bit. He left the night with six earned runs on eight hits and a walk to his name — and, eventually, a loss.

His last five decisions have been losses, dropping him to 12-10 for the season.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Adael Amador grounded out for the Rockies’ 27th out of the game, stranding pinch runner Zac Veen, who represented the potential game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 9.62 — Sugano’s ERA over his last six starts. In that span his season-long ERA has spiked from 4.43 to 5.49.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland returns to the mound to make his first start since Aug. 19 against the Dodgers. Ex-Los Angeles pitcher Walker Buehler will get the call for the Padres, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
