Rockies Report, Game 124:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A daring dash to the plate by Zac Veen when Giants catcher Drew Cavanaugh couldn’t find the baseball launched the Rockies to seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings, turning a 7-6 deficit into a 13-7 romp that clinched a second-consecutive series win for the Rockies and earned them a 5-4 record on their three-city, nine-game road swing.

Veen broke for the plate after a JT Brubaker wild pitch, but even though the ball was nearby, Cavanaugh couldn’t find it. Veen dashed for the plate from third base and successfully slid, knotting what had been a back-and-forth game at 7-apiece.

From there, it was all Rox. Brubaker walked Adael Amador and Jake McCarthy to load the bases, then plunked Cole Carrigg to give the Rockies the lead. At that point, Reiner Sanmartin relieved Brubaker, and Mickey Moniak responded by lining Sanmartin’s first pitch into left field, scoring Amador and McCarthy to push the Rockies in front, 10-7.

Brett Sullivan then turned the game into a romp with a 1-out, 3-run homer in the seventh inning to complete the scoring for the day.

Colorado’s batters stayed patient against the Giants’ pitchers, working 10 walks over the course of the day. The Rox improved to 50-74.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The big inning bit rookie starter Gabriel Hughes once again, as the Giants turned a 4-1 deficit halfway through the second into a 5-4 lead thanks to Drew Gilbert’s RBI single and a three-run homer from Rafael Devers.

Hughes faced the minimum only in the fourth inning, when Gilbert was picked off after reaching base via a Troy Johnston error. Warren Schaeffer lifted Hughes for reliever Nick Frasso after a leadoff walk to Bryce Eldridge in the fifth inning; Eldridge ultimately scored on a walk after Frasso loaded the bases via a single and a hit batter.

The day lasted 81 pitches for Hughes; he gave up seven earned runs on eight hits and a walk.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Sullivan tacked on three more runs with his seventh-inning homer.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 10 — Walks by Colorado batters on Sunday.

WHAT’S NEXT: A three-game series against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who just dropped three of four to the Milwaukee Brewers and are now 5-10 in August. The Rockies won’t see recent trade acquisition Tarik Skubal in the series, but they will see Blake Snell making just his third start of the season. Tomoyuki Sugano will get the ball for the Rox; first pitch Monday night from Coors Field is set for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
