Former Rockies top prospect given another shot, breakout youngster hits IL

The Rockies placed infielder Kyle Karros on the seven-day concussion injured list Wednesday, one day after a frightening collision with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar during Tuesday night’s 3-2 win over Arizona at Chase Field.

To fill the roster spot, the club recalled infielder Adael Amador from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Karros, who has emerged as one of Colorado’s brightest young hitters this season with an OPS of .785, exited Monday’s game in the sixth inning after his head appeared to collide with Tovar’s right shoulder as both converged on a ground ball off the bat of Arizona’s Ketel Marte. Karros spun to the ground in pain but eventually walked off the field under his own power. Tovar remained in the game.

“He’s going to be in the concussion protocol, so we’ll have an update tomorrow,” manager Warren Schaeffer said after the game.

The collision came just minutes after Karros belted a two-run home run — his 10th of the season — to snap a 15-inning scoreless drought spanning three games and tie the game at 2.

Amador, once a consensus top 40 prospect in baseball, gets his first crack at the big leagues this year. He has struggled in limited major league opportunities over the past two seasons, totaling 51 games with the Rockies. Still, he’s just 23 years old and is a versatile switch-hitting infielder, who has recently started playing left field a little bit.

In 86 games of Triple-A ball this year, Amador is slashing .261/.370/.432. It’s not eye-popping, especially considering what Zac Veen had to do to earn his callup but it makes sense why the young Dominican earned another call up before Charlie Condon, who is also very hot right now. Amador is running low on minor league options while it might behoove the Rockies to keep Condon off the 40-man roster if they believe a work stoppage is coming.

The Rockies are currently on their longest road trip of the season at nine games over 11 days.
