Rockies Report, Game 62:
ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: TJ Rumfield hit a home run that bounced off the glove and head of Angels right fielder Jo Adell and over the fence, benefitting from a Jose Canseco moment that punctuated the Rockies’ 8-2 throttling of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Tuesday night.

“I’ve never seen it,” Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer told media after the game. Schaeffer admitted that from his angle in the dugout, he couldn’t see exactly what happened. But replays will immortalize the moment for Adell — for the wrong reasons.
Rumfield’s carom shot was one of a season-high three homers off Colorado bats in Tuesday’s game. Hunter Goodman and Willi Castro provided the other bombs, helping the Rockies cruise to an 8-0 lead before the Angels could finally respond in the fifth inning.
The victory clinched a second-consecutive series win for the Rockies, who had dropped nine-straight series prior to taking two of three last weekend at home from the San Francisco Giants. Against an Angels side that sits at the foot of the American League West, Colorado pounded away for 12 hits, while also working five walks, one night after drawing 10 walks — and a pair of hit batters — from Angels pitchers.
As for Adell, the night was one to forget. Beyond the blooper in the outfield, he had an error and he hit into an unassisted double play in the bottom of the eighth inning, encapsulating the Angels’ frustrating night all around.
In contrast, the Rockies were all smiles as they won for the fourth time in their last five games and move out of the National League West cellar thanks to the Giants’ 8-3 loss to Milwaukee. Five Rockies had two hits apiece: Rumfield, Goodman, Edouard Julien, Jake McCarthy and Troy Johnston.
Colorado improved to 24-38.
ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT
A high pitch count through five innings — 96, to be exact — ensured that Tomoyuki Sugano didn’t earn a quality start for his work Tuesday night. But he turned in a solid night, allowing five hits and two walks over his five innings of work, and he kept the ball in the yard after giving up two home runs last week against the Dodgers and six in all over his four May starts.
“I thought his split was excellent today. Probably not quite as pitch-efficient as he usually is. I think the fastball command probably wasn’t where he wanted it to be, but the split was outstanding. Deep counts tonight for him, not a lot of first-pitch strikes, but fought his way back in counts, made pitches when he had to.”
Sugano nudged his ERA back below 4.00 and earned credit for the win, his fifth of the season.
BITS AND PIECES
IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Castro launched his three-run homer in the fourth inning to push Colorado’s lead to 7-0.
NUMBER TO NOTE: .393 — McCarthy’s batting average since May 26. He’s gone 4-for-9 against the Angels this week.
WHAT’S NEXT: Michael Lorenzen will try and get back on track in the series and road-trip finale. Walbert Ureña stats for the Angels. First pitch is scheduled for 7:38 p.m. MDT.
