Rapids defender will play in World Cup

The Colorado Rapids will be represented on soccer’s biggest stage this summer.

Defender Lucas Herrington has been selected to Australia’s national team roster for the upcoming World Cup, the Socceroos announced over the weekend, marking a milestone moment for both the player and the Major League Soccer club.

Herrington becomes the lone Rapids player headed to the global tournament, giving Colorado fans a hometown rooting interest once group play kicks off. He won’t be the only familiar face, though — former standout defender Auston Trusty was named to the U.S. men’s national team, and former forward Moise Bombito made Canada’s roster.

The call-up caps a strong stretch of form for Herrington. While he suits up for his country, his club will have nearly two months off as the soccer world turns its attention to the national teams competing in America this summer.

Australia faced Mexico over the weekend and will play Switzerland in another friendly in the coming days. The Socceroos share a group with the U.S., with the two sides set to meet June 19.
