One of hockey’s top voices calls for Avalanche to not change much

Fans of the Colorado Avalanche want big changes after the team was swept by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.

And the day after a stunning and shocking series loss, that’s within people’s right to feel that way. This wasn’t good enough against Vegas, an absolute kick in the stomach to end a Stanley Cup or Bust year.

But one of the top voices in hockey in Paul Bissonnette is calling for the Avalanche to not change much. “Biz” has become one of the faces of TNT’s NHL coverage as well as a staple on the popular podcast Spittin’ Chiclets. 

He’s not flying off the handle, instead advocating for Colorado to essentially run it back.

“I would not change (Jared) Bednar,” Bissonnette said.

He doesn’t think Colorado’s head coach should be fired after the Avalanche won the Presidents’ Trophy and had a historic regular season. They were also 8-1 through the first two-rounds of the playoffs.

“I think the vocal people online, as soon as something like that happens, especially when you were the favorite they’re like ‘something needs to change. Like, fire the coach, you got out-coached.’ Where it’s like really? Did he really get out-coached?” Bissonnette asked.

Vegas head coach John Tortorella had the back of Bednar postgame, something Bissonnette also eluded to in that clip above.

“If anything (Colorado) really needs to figure out the power play to where it becomes unstoppable. And that would probably be one thing I’d look to adjust the most on,” Bissonnette added.

The Avalanche went only 1-10 in the series on the power play and 7-34 for the entire playoffs, which is only about 20 percent. It was a struggle all season long and didn’t get better in the playoffs. And certainly against the Knights, even with superstars on the ice, the man-advantage was nowhere near lethal enough.

Bissonnette thinks the Avs need more defensive depth, but other than maybe just adding some size.

This is certainly an endorsement for Bednar and the rest of the roster. Whether or not management feels the same way will be interesting to watch over the next couple of days.
