Report: Rockies’ Antonio Senzatela could be one of the ‘hottest commodities’ at the trade deadline

The Rockies’ decision to move Antonio Senzatela from the rotation to the bullpen has revitalized his career. It’s paid off in giving them arguably their most-reliable relief arm this season.

And by the trade deadline, that could mean the Rockies get plenty in exchange for Senzatela.

Citing “rival executives,” USA Today‘s Bob Nightingale reports that Senzatela could be among the “hottest commodities” by the time Major League Baseball’s trade deadline arrives on Aug. 3 given how the 31-year-old right-hander has revived his fortunes since being moved out of the rotation last season.

The numbers show why. Among 230 pitchers who headed into Sunday’s play with at least 20 innings pitched, Senzatela ranked sixth in ERA and ninth in WHIP. He also picked up his third save of the season Saturday in the Rockies’ 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

ROCKIES MOVED SENZATELA OUT OF THE ROTATION LAST YEAR

The shift happened down the stretch last season, as Senzatela’s final six 2025 appearances came in relief. His ERA in those appearances — five of which covered at least three innings — was 3.50, which was an initial sign of progress. After the last of his 23 starts last season, his ERA stood at 7.15.

As he went into the final year of his contract, Colorado elected to keep him in the bullpen this season. His form has been spectacular; he’s allowed just four earned runs over 28 1/3 innings, with a WHIP of just 0.812 to pair with his 1.27 ERA. He also has 25 strikeouts against just eight walks.

With numbers like that, part of what enhances his value is the team option on his contract for 2027. If Senzatela maintains his form, a team that acquires him will surely acquire him with another season in mind. That could drive up the price in prospects the Rockies could command.

Senzatela is helpful to the Rockies’ bullpen, of course. But after starting May with a 4-9 mark to fall into last place at 10 games below .500, the reality of Colorado’s long-term predicament is clear, and the long-term value of what the Rockies can get for Senzatela would be wise to accept — assuming he can maintain his form.
