Rockies ride fast start to series-squaring win over Diamondbacks

Rockies Report, Game 46:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: After finishing on the business end of an early Arizona ambush Friday, the Rockies returned the favor Saturday, scoring twice in the first inning after their first three batters logged hits off of Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez, then adding another run in the second on a Jake McCarthy RBI for what would prove to be all the offense they needed in a 4-2 win that evened their series with the Diamondbacks in front of 34,405 at Coors Field.

Mickey Moniak provided two of the four runs. He brought home one of the first-inning runs with a single, then added another RBI when he was plunked by Brandyn Garcia with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, adding an insurance run.

Colorado got production from up and down the lineup, as eight of the nine players in the lineup recorded hits on a 12-hit day overall for the team. Only rookie Sterlin Thompson was shut out; he went 0-for-3 in his starting debut in right field after grounding out in his pinch-hit appearance Friday night.

The Rockies tagged Rodriguez with his first loss of the season. Colorado improved to 18-28.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tomoyuki Sugano found himself dodging a bit more trouble on the base paths than he has in most of his starts this season, but he minimized the damage enough to ensure that the three runs Colorado put on the board early stood up, allowing him to earn his fourth win of the season.

Sugano allowed seven hits and two walks. He also plunked Nolan Arenado in the third inning. Only in his final inning — the fifth — did he avoid allowing multiple Diamondbacks to reach base. But the only run Sugano allowed came via a second-inning double steal; aside from that, he doused every fire he faced.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Senzatela closed out the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning for his third career save.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.27 — Senzatela’s ERA so far this season after a 6.65 mark last season that was his worst since 2019.

WHAT’S NEXT: Colorado looks for its first series win of May in Sunday’s series finale. It’ll be a duel of Michaels — Colorado’s Lorenzen and Arizona’s Soroka. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. MDT.
